Accompaniment Instruments Frequencies, Networks and Configurations

C Chatzimichail, AT Hatjimihail

Abstract

We introduce AccompaNet, a Wolfram Language application linking instrument frequencies, co-occurrence networks and complete accompaniment configurations. Applied to a listening-based corpus of 100 recordings of 21 Smyrnaic songs, it distinguishes instrument recurrence from partnership diversity. Guitar is the most prevalent and broadly connected resource, while cimbalom and tambourine exhibit contrasting patterns of recurrence and connectivity. Groups of instruments linked pairwise need not occur together, demonstrating the importance of retaining complete configurations. AccompaNet provides a reproducible framework for describing accompaniment composition and identifying comparisons for closer study of rhythmic articulation, instrumental texture and musical roles.
